One of Georgia's fastest growing metropolitan statistical areas is anchored by the growing community of Athens/Clarke County. Though the geographically smallest county in the state, by acreage, it has among the highest educational attainment levels and among the fastest growing percentages of relocating retirees.
The county has a significant economic divide and among the highest poverty rates for a metro area. The economic divide is largely geographic as well as racial. These shifts in demographics and increased political activism by Millennials and newer residents have also led to a significant public policy shift by local government.
